Luanda Convention Palace opens as Angola creates world-class international events centre.

The 'soft opening' of the new Luanda Convention Palace highlights the country's ambitions to host international events.

This incredible new venue has already welcomed African Heads of State, whilst further developments continue to expand Angola's MICE infrastructure.

This is an important step in their strategy to establish Luanda as an emerging destination for international congresses, conferences and corporate events.

The venue was officially inaugurated on 24th August by the President of the Republic of Angola, João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço, and has already demonstrated its international hosting capability, welcoming the 21st Extraordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union, which took place on 30th August.

The opening represents the first phase in the development of the Convention Centre. While key facilities are now operational and able to accommodate events, further sections and associated infrastructure remain under development. Angola is therefore positioning the current phase as a soft opening, with capacity and facilities set to expand as the wider project progresses.

Built across an 80,000m² site, the convention centre includes a 3,000-seat multipurpose theatre alongside conference, meeting, business and hospitality facilities designed to accommodate a variety of event formats.

The development is intended to become an important anchor for Angola's growing MICE sector, supporting the country's ambition to attract international associations, corporate meetings, congresses and major events.

It forms part of a broader strategy led by the Ministry of Tourism to develop a coordinated business events ecosystem through the Angola Convention Bureau and the national Meet in Angola – The Meeting Room in Africa initiative.

Rather than viewing the venue in isolation, the strategy is designed to connect international event organisers with hotels, transportation providers, destination management companies, guides, interpreters, event producers and other specialist suppliers.

Minister of Tourism Márcio de Jesus Lopes Daniel said:

"It is not only about this infrastructure. It has to be connected to hotels, car rental companies, transfer companies, guides and interpreters. It is an entire ecosystem that will now be integrated into the Angola Convention Bureau."

The development comes alongside significant investment in Angola's wider international infrastructure. The new Dr. António Agostinho Neto International Airport has capacity for up to 15 million passengers annually and is strengthening Luanda's ability to accommodate growing international traffic.

For international event organisers, Angola also offers the opportunity to combine meetings and conferences with a destination that remains largely undiscovered by international visitors. From Luanda, delegates can extend their stay to experience the country's Atlantic coastline, national parks, cultural heritage and natural landmarks including Kalandula Falls and the landscapes of the Namibe Desert.

The soft opening represents the beginning rather than the completion of Angola's MICE ambitions. Further development of the Convention Centre and its surrounding infrastructure will progressively increase the range and scale of events the destination is able to accommodate.

Through the Angola Convention Bureau, the country will continue to build its international MICE proposition as infrastructure, hospitality capacity and destination services develop.
