9th August 2026 : Cangandala National Park (Malanje Province) was the scene of a truly extraordinary and unprecedented moment: the gathering of more than 200 Giant Sable Antelopes in a single location.
More than just a scientific record, this remarkable event stands as the greatest symbol of wildlife recovery and a source of immense pride for all Angolans.
For many long and painful decades, the majestic and imposing presence of the Giant Sable Antelope (Hippotragus niger variani) was overshadowed by the relentless threat of extinction. The devastating impact of the armed conflict that ravaged the country during and after independence, combined with human pressure on natural ecosystems, reduced the population of this endemic species to critically low numbers, leading many experts to fear the worst.
However, the perseverance of the Ministry of Environment, through the National Institute of Biodiversity and Conservation Areas (INBAC), in close collaboration with strategic partners and local communities, has proven that hope was never in vain. To see more than 200 Giant Sable Antelopes gathered today, roaming freely in their natural sanctuary of Cangandala, represents a victory of perseverance over adversity. the gathering of more than 200 Giant Sable Antelopes in a single location.
